Sermon Outline:

Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV)

6 For unto us a Child is born,

Unto us a Son is given;

And the government will be upon His shoulder.

And His name will be called

Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Relating Isa 6b to the passage in Mark 5:1-20.

Consider the meaning of “His name” in Isa6.9b:

i)     Wonderful: incomprehensible, extraordinary, remarkable, secret

(Jud13.18)

The Lord is both God and Man. His love is the wonder of angels and of glorified saints. A constant series of wonders attended him in his birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension. He is wonderful and without controversy; great is the mystery of godliness concerning him: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory (1Tim3.16).

ii)     Counsellor: advise, give counsel, guide

(Prov11.14, 15.22)

He is the Eminent counsellor, intimately acquainted with God’s counsels from eternity. He counsels the children of men. It is by him that God counsels us, Ps. 16:7; Rev. 3:18. Christ is the wisdom of the Father and our wisdom.

iii)     The Mighty God: Almighty God

(Dan4.35; Joh1.1-5)

As he has wisdom, so he has the strength to complete his undertaking: he is able to save to the utmost. Only the Mighty God can be the Mediator between God and man (1 Tim2.5).

iv)      The Everlasting Father: Father of Eternity

(Joh6.54, 10.27-28.)

The Lord Jesus is God, one with the Father, who is from everlasting to everlasting. He is the author of everlasting life and happiness to those who are saved, and so is the Father to them of a blessed eternity. He is the Father of the world to come (so the Septuagint reads it), the Father of the gospel-state, which is put in subjection to him. He was from eternity the Father of the great work of redemption: his heart of love as the everlasting Father was upon it. The Lord addressed the paralytic as “son” in Mark2.5 and the Apostle Paul considered Onesimus his son in Phi 1.10 and also Timothy (1 Tim 1:2, 18).

v)       The Prince of Peace: Chief of Peace

(Joh14.27, 16.33)

As a King, he creates peace, commands peace and preserves peace in his kingdom. He is our peace, and His peace keeps the hearts of His people and rules in them. He is not only a peaceable prince who reigns peaceably, but he is the author and giver of his subjects’ present peace and future happiness.

How the Name of Christ of Isa9.6 relates to Mark5.1-20:

i)       Wonderful:

Vs1-2a; Matt15.22-28; [Rom3.29]

Mark 4: The Lord taught using parables – The Sower, The Seed, etc and He crossed from Capernaum to the country of Gadarenes, and He calmed the storm in the process.

Then we come to Mark5. This area was predominantly gentile, as historians reported that it was predominantly a Roman military garrison area, which accounted for the rearing of pigs.

ii)      Counsellor:

vs15a, 19:

iii)      The Mighty God:

vs2b, 6-9 [Matt8.29], 10-13

iv)     The Everlasting Father:

vs15a, 18-20

v)      The Prince of Peace:

v3-5 (Luk8.27) Compare with v15

Application: How should I react to this Jesus?

vs14, 15b-17, 18, 20-21; Rom10.11-13.
