“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23, ESV)

15/03/2020 – Evening Service: A Love Story

Bible Readings:

Genesis 24

Sermon Outline:

Genesis 24:1–4 (NKJV)

1Now Abraham was old, well advanced in age; and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.

2So Abraham said to the oldest servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had, “Please, put your hand under my thigh,

3and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;

4but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”

I  A Love Story, In Four Acts

  1. A Solemn Entrustment
  2. A Happy Encounter
  3. A Marriage Proposal
  4. A Comfortable Companion

II  Why such a love story?

1 – Because marriage is very important.

“Marriage must not be entered upon lightly or inadvisedly, but thoughtfully, reverently and in the fear of God, with due consideration of the ends for which it was ordained.”

2 – The Lord God has so honoured marriage that He has used it as an illustration, indeed a type of His relationship with His people.

Ephesians 5:25–27 (NKJV)

25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,

26that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,

27that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.

The Church’s one foundation
Is Jesus Christ her Lord
She is His new creation
By water and the word;
From heav’n He came and sought her
To be His holy bride;
With His own blood He bought her,
And for her life He died.

Revelation 19:9 (NKJV)

9Then he said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’ ” And he said to me, “These are the true sayings of God.”
